Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

G D Paulraj - Lunchtime

Quick post today of a painting I acquired from California a few years ago.  When I first came across it was for sale in Florida, but I missed it as the seller would only sell within the USA and it went really cheap to a dealer in California.  I battled for nearly six months and eventually got him to lower his price.  It is called "Lunchtime' and is one of my favourites.
This is the painting that has the discarded painting on the reverse, maybe that is why it is a dark painting to stop any colour showing through from the other side.  I like it a lot and in the distance you can see another boat in the gloom.  Hope you like this one.

G D Paul Raj - Rear of Painting

I made an interesting discovery when I was reframing this painting by Paul Raj that there was an abandoned painting on the reverse which looks like some attempt had been made to wash it away.  Never the less and interesting discovery.
The back also has the address of Paul Raj at the time he did this painting and the next photo shows this.
I will show the front of the painting next it is called "Lunchtime" and is my all time favourite.

G D Thyagaraj - Market Stall

Today I am posting another painting by Thyagaraj of a Market stall scene.

It is quite a colourful painting with a great lattice work window in the background however, the cows necks might be slightly suspect.  But who am I to comment when I cannot paint!!

G D Paul Raj - The Bazaar

This painting by G D Paul Raj sold at auction a few years ago in Florida USA.  The photo is a bit grainy as it is only a low quality one.
It is not dissimilar to one I own of a market scene so could be from the same time and place.  The stall holder if the foreground is busy cooking something in a large pan.

G D Thyagaraj - City Gates x Two

I came across two very similar paintings by G D Thyagaraj clearly done of the same place with a slight alteration to the activity.  One has a bullock cart coming through the city gate.
The second has a camel cart coming through the same gates, do they have any particular name?
The two paintings are ever so slightly different but very interesting all the same.  Hope you like this pair.

G D Paul Raj - "Wash Day" or "Back Yard"

I tried to buy this painting several years ago from Ebay but was not successful, it was give the name "Wash Day'" and has a label on the reverse giving the price of the painting and the address of Paul Raj at the time.
The label has the painting being sold for Rs 275/- and being called "Back Yard" and not Wash Day and shows three ladies doing their laundry.
The label looks like it has been removed from the back of a previous frame or mount and then stuck to a newer frame and has received some damage in the process.  I quite like this one with not too much going on in the painting.

G D Arulraj- Night Fishing

This is a painting by G D Arulraj recently arrived from Silverado in California, USA.  It seems to be a scene of fishing boats at night.
The man on the beach in the foreground is in silhouette and the boats have a light burning which is painted on in white.  Photo of his signature follows, the painting is around 34 cm x 21 cm smaller than others I have seen by Arul.  On the reverse it had a label saying $25.00.
Look at my posting for 9 November 2009 for a very similar painting bt Arulraj.
