Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

G D Arulraj - Watercolour Technique

Wow!  I have just visited the Raj brothers Facebook site and came across a film of G D Arulraj talking about his painting style and giving a demonstration.  You can access the site from the following link.

The film is eighteen minutes in length and I guess was filmed sometime in the 1950's I will try and find out when.  I am sure all you artists out there will appreciate it.  It is great to actually see the artist and there is a very short clip of someone talking with Arul while he is painting and I wondered if this might be one of his brothers?  Please let me know what you think of the film.  Below is a photo of Arul from the film clip.

G D Paulraj - Sweet Seller

This painting sold in SAn Diego during 2009 and might have then resurfaced in the UK and was sold again.  It appears to be of a man selling 'sweets' or cakes of some kind?  Maybe some looking at the blog might know and be able to post a comment.
It is clearly from a time that Paul was doing more close up studies than his more typical works.

G D Paulraj - The Bazaar, Maharashtra

Water colour by G D Paulraj of The Bazaar, Maharashtra this is again slightly different to some earlier posts the people are larger and more prominent, I only wish I could date the paintings to see how his style changed over the years.
It looks a really busy open air market and quite a colourful painting.

G D Thyagaraj - The Bazaar

Came across this one by Thyagaraj the other day of a bazaar scene.
The sky is dark and moody, shame it is only a low resolution photo.  It measures painting - 12 5/8" Height x 19 1/8" Width. Framed - 20 3/8" Height x 25 1/2" Width

G D Paulraj - Father and Daughter

I came across this painting the other day I think it sold in an auction in Stockholm in Sweden at www.lauritz.com on 5 March 2010.  It measured 36.5 x 50.5 cms.  The estimated price was around £139 and the hammer price was only £62.56.
It appears to be of a father and daughter or maybe a grandfather and a daughter, it is quite different so many other Paul Raj paintings I have seen as it is is close up of only two people.  A photo of the signature follows.

The auction description said that there was some small damage to the painting.  Hope you like this one.

G D Paulraj - Blustery Day

I came across this photo of a painting by G D Paulraj, I understand the owners were given it as a wedding present over 30 years ago and were looking for information on the artist.  I tried to contact them but did not get a reply, shame.
I am unsure what is going on in this painting the lady in the foreground is standing on some kind of platform and in the distance is another platform with a roof.  Anyone know what is going on here?

G D Thyagaraj - Street Seller

Today is another water colour by G D Thyagaraj, I am not so keen on this one, his close up of the ladies makes them look very square featured.
It does look hot with the old man having to use an umbrella for shade.  This is the second of two that were sold at auction in January 2010 in Knoxville in Tennessee.

G D Thyagaraj - Gateway

I have come across a couple of Thyaga Raj paintings that were auctioned in January 2010 in the USA.  The first is a gateway scene but only a low quality photo.

I think this is a nice painting, Thyaga seemed to be keen on painting city gates.  I will post the next painting in a few days time.  I have also included a copy of his signature from this painting.

G D Paulraj - Shaded Market

This is a painting by G D Paulraj of a shaded market.  It was one of a pair I purchased from the USA a couple of years ago.  The previous owner had worked for the USA diplomatic corps in New Delhi.  The paintings were being sold both the death of the owner.
The painting is behind ordinary glass and my dining room lights are reflected at the top of the painting.  This came along with the Banana Market painting.  I think Paul has done a great job of capturing the canopies shading the market stalls.  I have not put non-reflective glass in as the rear of the painting is tacked onto the frame and it would be very destructive to change the glass, so I have decided to live with this one. Hope you like it.

G D Thyagaraj - Market Stall 2

Another painting by Thyagaraj it seems to be a very similar composition to one a posted a week or two back but with a slightly different angle.
The photo is only a low quality image again I am afraid and the colours are lighter than the last one or just more faded.  Hope you like it.

G D Thyagaraj - Stormy Day

Today I am posting another painting by G D Thyagaraj which depicts a stormy day with the trees blowing in the wind and puddles on the road.
Unfortunately I do not have a better quality photograph of the painting but it still captures the damp windy day.
