Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

The Raj Brothers

I came across an interesting article by a gentleman called Sajith Kumar called "Showing artists the moolah" which discusses the works of the three Raj brothers in an exhibition in Calcutta 50 years ago.

Some of the text follows:  "In the same catalogue, the works of artists are listed along with the prices of their works. For instance, we can cite the instance of the well-known watercolourists of the G D Raj family — Arul, Paul and Thyagaraj. G D Arul Raj’s four paintings and Thyagaraj’s were each priced at a meager Rs 35. G D Paul Raj fared better, with 10 works priced between Rs 125 and Rs 175."

You can find the article in full at. "Showing artists the moolah"

Today I am adding a photo of a painting by G D Paulraj it shows two people resting in the shade of a large tree.  I was sent this photo by my friend Kashinath.

G D Thyagaraj - Keeping Watch

I came across this painting for sale on Ebay several years ago and at that time I did not know that G D Thyagaraj was the brother of Paul and Arulraj. I probably would have purchased it had I known.  It had some damage in the form of foxing and the photograph shows some reflection on the glass.
It is similar to one by Paul Raj in that it shows a man keeping watch on his fields.  I was told that this kind of platform is called a "Machaan".  It seems to show a sunset which has been captured very well.  I hope you like it.

G D Paulraj - Oil Painting

Today I have a slightly unusual posting of what is an oil painting signed by Paulraj.  This is the first oil I have seen by him but have heard of others.
It is owned by a gentleman in Switzerland who contacted me a year ago to seek my views.  I am a little undecided but think I prefer his water colour paintings.

I have attached a copy of his signature as well for reference.

Chogan Gate, Bundi, Rajasthan

A few weeks ago I posted a painting by G D Thyagaraj of a gate to a city and I wondered where it was.  I also mentioned this on the Raj Facebook page and a kind gentleman has indentified the place as the Chogan Gate, Bundi, Rajasthan.  I have attached a photo of the gate.
I have also attached the painting by Thyaga for comparison as well.

It certainly looks like the same place to me, I find it great when you can identify a place like this.  Hope you like it.
