Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

Covered cart from 1959 cine

I have captured a very small clip of a covered cart from a family cine film taken in Vizag in India in 1959.

The cine clip has been converted to mp4 format and follows below, it is 9.0Mbytes in size and lasts 16 seconds.

Scenes like this are becoming less common.

Home cine films - Calcutta 1957

My family took many cine films when we lived in India the earliest date from 1957 until the mid 1970s.  I have recently purchased a digital scanner and I am working my way through the collection and I am converting the cine from 8mm film to modern digital format. Along the way I am extracting a few short clips that might be of interest to viewers of my blog.  This is the first of the clips.  It shows the gardener or 'marli', the dhobi collecting our laundry, workmen working on the new drive and preparing the lawn for the grass seed.  Then a couple of clips of a muscle powered fun fare rides, not much health and safety rules in 1957.

G D Paulraj - Women working in the fields

This painting is owned by Lauren's family in Scotland, she contacted me in September 2017 with some questions and then sent me this photo.  Unfortunately it is a bit blurred. However she intends to send me a better photo later this month when she is home.  It was purchased in Laguna Beach USA from Arul's shop by a Canadian couple who ended up living in Scotland.  Following their passing it was given to Lauren's grandmother.  On the back is fixed a note and a post card from Arul's shop which we have seen before.  Thank you Lauren for sharing.

Then a copy of the note and postcard follow below.

G D Arulraj - Dusty Road

Today I have added a painting that I purchased several years ago from the USA which was shipped to the UK unframed to reduce the transportation costs.  Consequently it was put away until sometime I could get around to framing it.  The other snag was that it was a larger painting than I had expected measuring 36 inches by 24 inches. Well finally I have it framed and hanging in my hallway and I am pleased with the result.
To make space for it I have had to move around the paintings that I own.  I am pleased with the final result, paintings always look so much better once they have been framed.

"Hour of the Cowdust" Exhibition

I was contacted by Kiran who has let me know about an exhibition of Indian Landscapes by G D Paul Raj at his local museum dakshinachitra.net

The exhibition shows a considerable number of G D Pal Raj's watercolours and runs from 8th September until 30th September 2017.  See the poster below for details.

I do not believe I have seen any of the works on the poster before, it is a shame but I am unable to attend the exhibition.  If anyone has been and took some photographs I would look to seem them, my contact email is on the top of my blog. Many thanks to Kiran for alerting me to the exhibition, I was away on vacation in Croatia at the time.

A very nice painting by Arul showing cows standing in the shade with a wrought iron gate in the background.
Also a well painted tree. Sold by an internet auction site in 2017.

G D Thyagaraj - Street scene

This sold at auction for £85.00 in the UK in 2017 quite a reasonable price and it is a nice street scene by Thyagaraj.
A very typical painting showing everyday life on the street.

M S Devasahayam - Buffalo

I recently came across this painting by M S Devasahayam who was a contemporary of the Raj brothers.  I had not see his works before but there are a lot on the internet.  Similar kind of style.  Hope you like this work.
I understand that this one dates from 1961 and it only cost Rs/-20.00

G D Thyagaraj - Market and Mosque

I was contacted by Daniel in the USA who sent me a photo of a painting he owns by Thyagaraj showing a Market and Mosque scene.  It was framed in Karachi, I have added a photo of the framers details I wonder if the shop is still in the market?  It was probably framed way back in the 1940's or 50's.
I would like to thank Daniel for allowing me to add his painting to the blog.

G D Paulraj - House and cows

This is a nice painting by G D Paulraj of a small village house with three cows standing around outside.
I do not think I have added this one previously? It is becoming more difficult to remember especially as many themes are repeated time and time again with only slight differences.

G D Paulraj - Washing clothes in the river

This is by G D Paulraj showing a group of women cleaning clothes in the stream or small river.  Nice looking painting with old frame.
Great trees in the bend in the river and the colours are still fresh after all this  time.

Oil Painting of Kanchenjunga

My mother purchased an oil painting around 1965 in Calcutta it is approximately 36" x 24" it depicts a mountain in Nepal called Kanchenjunga which I believe is the 3rd largest in the world.
It is signed in the bottom right hand corner is yellow paint and dated.  There also appears some writing in red paint just below and left of the main signature which is overpainted and not readable?
The signature in yellow might read "h shah 1966" does anyone have any better ideas?
I have done some Googling and have not found any similar painting by an H Shah.  I did find a famous artist 'Himmat Shah" but his works seem different.  Can anyone come up with any suggestions?

G D Paulraj - Chequers game

The watercolour today is a little different from Paulraj being that is shows some detail of a group of women playing some kind of game maybe chequers?
Quite a colourful painting and attractive as well.

G D Arulraj - Evening Walk

Today is a watercolour by Arul Raj showing a man at dusk taking a few cows home for the night.
It is an intense painting with bright light from the setting sun.

G D Thyagaraj - Temple in the lake

Watercolour of a lake or tank with a temple showing.
Quite a moody painting with the misty background and the violet hues.

Another very nice painting by Paul Raj showing cattle being herded along a road.
Mountains are visible in the background and the trees do not have much foliage.

G D Paulraj - Separating the wheat from the chaff

I have been quiet lazy for a few months and had not posted anything on my blog so I have made an effort today and found this great painting by G D Paulraj of a group of women who are separating the wheat from the chaff.

It is signed in the bottom right corner by G D Paulraj.
