Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

Flora Fountain by Norman Ellison

Today I thought I would add a painting I bought a little while ago which I now know to Flora Fountain in Bombay.
I was painted by a British army officer called Norman Ellison in 1944 while he was stationed in India.  Many of his scenes are of rural India but this one was recognisable.  I gave this to my daughter's partner who is from Bombay, we intend to frame it tomorrow night so they can hang it on the wall of their new flat in London.  Hope you like it.

G D Arulraj - Mountain Scene

This painting is currently for sale on EBay by a seller in the USA it is a mountain scene with snow.
His signature is quite spidery in this painting and I have not yet decided whether this makes it an earlier painting or not.

If you like the painting go to Ebay and have a bid, it has a fairly low starting price. Hope you like it.

G D Paulraj - The Quarry

A friend who owns a Paul Raj painting tipped me off the other day that this painting is up for sale in the UK on the 8th and 9 September at Peter Wilson auction house in Nantwich, Cheshire.
I have never seen one like this before and apparently it is dated as well November 1947 which is several months after India obtained Independence from Britain in August 1947.  My father was in Bombay during this time and I can remember him telling me that it was very grim.

It certainly is unusual to see a Paul Raj painting without a tree. The picture is only very low resolution.

G D Paulraj - Dusty Road

I think this is by G D Paulraj, I only have a low resolution image so the signature is hard to read.  One of his usual dusty road and cart convoy images.
I like it I hope you do.

G D Paulraj - Sadhu

Today I am adding what seems to be a fairly rare close up of a Sadu by G D Paulraj.

It is not one of my favourites but it is still interesting due to the difference with the normal paintings by Paul.  I have also added a link to a Sadhu article on Wikipedia.  Sadhu

G D Paulraj - Village Fair

This is another by G D paulraj showing a man selling baskets at a village fair.  It has a lot more detail on the people than many of his other paintings.
I like this painting it is colourful and attractive with a lot going on, the baskets look pretty as well.
