Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

G D Paulraj - Going Home

I do not think this one has been added to the blog before, it looks like it is a windy and wet day and the family is 'Going Home'.

The two women are carrying items on their head and one has a baby hanging onto her neck.

G D Paulraj - Women dancing around young girl

I have seen this painting for sale on the web for a number of years, the first time it was framed maybe 10 years ago or more.  It appeared on Ebay recently without a frame and with some damage in the shape of a couple of scratches and dents.  I got it for the asking price of £100.00 which was fairly expensive considering the damage.  My wife liked it as it was quite different to his usual paintings, it is in gouache and the subject matter is unusual, it is unclear what it depicts, could it be the little girl's birthday?  Anyway I hope you like it.

G D Thyagaraj - Carts and Trees

The painting below has kindly been sent to me by Mike from Vermont in the USA, he purchased the painting directly from the artist in New Delhi in 1966 while he was in India as part of the Peace Corps.  He has kindly allowed me to add the photo to my blog site, it is one the most popular scenes painted by the brothers.

It is a nice painting with deep shadows and powerful trees.  Once again I would like to thank Mike for sharing his painting. It is showing a little damage after all these years but would very nice once framed again.

G D paulraj - 2 x Oil paintings

I recently came across these two oil paintings for sale by an antiques dealer in the UK, I made an enquiry about the price but the reply advised that the paintings had already been sold. We do not see very many oil paintings by Paul Raj so it is exciting when they do appear.

A typical cart convoy with trees in oil so it appears to be brighter, maybe the oil paint is retaining the colours better than the watercolours?

The second oil painting is a street scene with vendors selling fruit and vegetables.  Both are very nice paintings in original frames from the time that they were painted.

Air India International Silk Scarf

I recently came across a silk scarf which had 21 prints of Air-India coasters printed on it from the 1960s.  My wife has got this framed and now it is hanging on the wall in our house.  I can remember the coasters from the time I travelled on Air India when my sister and I would collect them.  The prints on the scarf are a little larger than the actual drinks coasters.  The frame measures 95cm x 95cm.

It is far better framed than in a drawer, it can now be appreciated and you can laugh at some of the different cities depicted in the coasters.

G D Paulraj - Palms and Fields

Recently came across this painting for sale on Etsy in The UK for £320.00
It is a nice water colour by Paulraj titled 'Palms and Fields'.  It also has a price on the rear of Rs 65/- so must be a relatively early painting.  It was framed by a company in Bombay called Chemould.

G D Thyagaraj - Beating the Paddy

Watercolour by Thyagaraj believed to be from around 1958 depicting two women crushing (rice?) in a large pot with heavy poles.  It looks like they are trying to take the husks off the rice?
It has been painted straight on, it is more come to be left to right or right to left, quite a colourful scene and interesting.

G D Thyagaraj - Windy Day

I was recently contacted by Brent who owns a painting by G D Thyagaraj that was purchased in India back in 1963 when his parents were living and working there.  The painting depicts a windy day with people in a village.  The trees are bending with the strong winds.

I understand that Brent might like to sell his painting if you are interested drop my an email and I can then forward on to him so you can obtain further information.

G D Thyagaraj - Cattle Convoy - Dusty Road

Recently came across this water colour for sale in the USA for $109.99 US dollars by G D Thyagaraj, very typical scene, cattle convoy on a dusty road.  What was a little unusual that on the rear were was a pencil sketch of a male showing muscles and legs.

Followed by a photo of the rear of the painting showing the pencil sketch.

G D Paulraj - Preparaing for the Puja

This is a nice watercolour by G D Paulraj showing two women drawing on the ground in readiness for puja ceremony.
The painting is very much straight on whereas most scenes involving roads and carts are on an angle.

Just found a second painting on the same theme, I think it is by Paulraj but not certain difficult to read the signature . But painted from a different angle altogether.

G D Thyagaraj - Cooking on the boat

I just purchased this nice water scene by Thyagaraj two weeks ago, it was selling on Ebay. Got it for a very reasonable price.
I will take some better photos when I remove it from the frame as the frame needs to be glued a little.  It has a sticker on the back saying it was framed in Park Street in Calcutta, where I lived between 1957 and 1974 (off and on). Hope you like it.

G D Paulraj - Family on a boat

This is a fairly unusual painting by Paulraj showing a family on a boat being punted by use of a long pole down a stream or canal.  The father is working the boat while the mother is taking care of a small child and two goats are roaming the deck.  Quite a fun composition.
I do not remember seeing a Paulraj goat before.

G D Thyagaraj - Collecting the catch

I have been sent a photo by Stan of a great painting by Thyagaraj of a scene showing women with large baskets on their heads carrying fish aware from the boats on the beach.  This was recently acquired by Stan in Vancouver. Nice find and very intense colours.  Thanks again Stan for sharing your photos.
And another of his signature.

Another painting by Thyagaraj sold in February 2018 for around £95.00 (or 133 US dollars) again well worth the money.

G D Thyagaraj - Cart Convoy

Great watercolour by Thyagaraj of a cart convoy recently sold on an internet auction site for around £110 (or 152 US dollars) well worth the money and nicely framed.
Very nice painting.

G D Paulraj - Ladies doing the dhobi

Painting by G D Paulraj today shows a group of women doing the dhobi in a stream.  Similar to the cine films I added recently.

Dhobi cine taken in 1959

More extracts from my family cine film taken in 1959.  There are two different clips of dhobis at work one taken at a stream and the second at the beach.

These scenes match several paintings painted by G D Paulraj.

Fishermen cine taken in 1959

Today I am adding some clips from a cine showing some fishermen hauling in their nets in at Vizagapatnam on the east coast of India taken in early 1959.  I have added the sounds of the waves as the camera did not record any sound.
Women waiting to collect the catch and carry it off in their baskets to sell.
Women trying to sell fish on the beach with huge baskets carried on their heads.
Hauling in the nets up onto the beach.
Short cine film lasting 39 seconds showing the fishermen hauling in their nets and a crowd watching.

Covered cart from 1959 cine

I have captured a very small clip of a covered cart from a family cine film taken in Vizag in India in 1959.

The cine clip has been converted to mp4 format and follows below, it is 9.0Mbytes in size and lasts 16 seconds.

Scenes like this are becoming less common.
