Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

G D Paulraj - Going Home

I do not think this one has been added to the blog before, it looks like it is a windy and wet day and the family is 'Going Home'.

The two women are carrying items on their head and one has a baby hanging onto her neck.

G D Paulraj - Women dancing around young girl

I have seen this painting for sale on the web for a number of years, the first time it was framed maybe 10 years ago or more.  It appeared on Ebay recently without a frame and with some damage in the shape of a couple of scratches and dents.  I got it for the asking price of £100.00 which was fairly expensive considering the damage.  My wife liked it as it was quite different to his usual paintings, it is in gouache and the subject matter is unusual, it is unclear what it depicts, could it be the little girl's birthday?  Anyway I hope you like it.

G D paulraj - 2 x Oil paintings

I recently came across these two oil paintings for sale by an antiques dealer in the UK, I made an enquiry about the price but the reply advised that the paintings had already been sold. We do not see very many oil paintings by Paul Raj so it is exciting when they do appear.

A typical cart convoy with trees in oil so it appears to be brighter, maybe the oil paint is retaining the colours better than the watercolours?

The second oil painting is a street scene with vendors selling fruit and vegetables.  Both are very nice paintings in original frames from the time that they were painted.

G D Paulraj - Palms and Fields

Recently came across this painting for sale on Etsy in The UK for £320.00
It is a nice water colour by Paulraj titled 'Palms and Fields'.  It also has a price on the rear of Rs 65/- so must be a relatively early painting.  It was framed by a company in Bombay called Chemould.

G D Paulraj - Preparaing for the Puja

This is a nice watercolour by G D Paulraj showing two women drawing on the ground in readiness for puja ceremony.
The painting is very much straight on whereas most scenes involving roads and carts are on an angle.

Just found a second painting on the same theme, I think it is by Paulraj but not certain difficult to read the signature . But painted from a different angle altogether.

G D Paulraj - Family on a boat

This is a fairly unusual painting by Paulraj showing a family on a boat being punted by use of a long pole down a stream or canal.  The father is working the boat while the mother is taking care of a small child and two goats are roaming the deck.  Quite a fun composition.
I do not remember seeing a Paulraj goat before.

G D Paulraj - Ladies doing the dhobi

Painting by G D Paulraj today shows a group of women doing the dhobi in a stream.  Similar to the cine films I added recently.

G D Paulraj - Women working in the fields

This painting is owned by Lauren's family in Scotland, she contacted me in September 2017 with some questions and then sent me this photo.  Unfortunately it is a bit blurred. However she intends to send me a better photo later this month when she is home.  It was purchased in Laguna Beach USA from Arul's shop by a Canadian couple who ended up living in Scotland.  Following their passing it was given to Lauren's grandmother.  On the back is fixed a note and a post card from Arul's shop which we have seen before.  Thank you Lauren for sharing.

Then a copy of the note and postcard follow below.

"Hour of the Cowdust" Exhibition

I was contacted by Kiran who has let me know about an exhibition of Indian Landscapes by G D Paul Raj at his local museum dakshinachitra.net

The exhibition shows a considerable number of G D Pal Raj's watercolours and runs from 8th September until 30th September 2017.  See the poster below for details.

I do not believe I have seen any of the works on the poster before, it is a shame but I am unable to attend the exhibition.  If anyone has been and took some photographs I would look to seem them, my contact email is on the top of my blog. Many thanks to Kiran for alerting me to the exhibition, I was away on vacation in Croatia at the time.

G D Paulraj - House and cows

This is a nice painting by G D Paulraj of a small village house with three cows standing around outside.
I do not think I have added this one previously? It is becoming more difficult to remember especially as many themes are repeated time and time again with only slight differences.

G D Paulraj - Washing clothes in the river

This is by G D Paulraj showing a group of women cleaning clothes in the stream or small river.  Nice looking painting with old frame.
Great trees in the bend in the river and the colours are still fresh after all this  time.

G D Paulraj - Chequers game

The watercolour today is a little different from Paulraj being that is shows some detail of a group of women playing some kind of game maybe chequers?
Quite a colourful painting and attractive as well.

G D Paulraj - Home time

Another very nice painting by Paul Raj showing cattle being herded along a road.
Mountains are visible in the background and the trees do not have much foliage.

G D Paulraj - Separating the wheat from the chaff

I have been quiet lazy for a few months and had not posted anything on my blog so I have made an effort today and found this great painting by G D Paulraj of a group of women who are separating the wheat from the chaff.

It is signed in the bottom right corner by G D Paulraj.

G D Paulraj - Washing Clothes in the river

I have very kindly been sent a photo of this Paulraj painting it is owned by Ravi in Malaysia.  It shows a busy scene of a group of women washing clothes in a river.

It is similar to some that we have seen before but a nice painting.  Thanks Ravi.

G D Paulraj - Sweeping

A beautiful painting by Paulraj showing a lady sweeping the area in front of her house.  A nice village scene with an amazing old tree.

G D Paulraj - Sari seller

This is a nice water colour by G D Paulraj of a man selling saris in a market.
This seems to be from a period when he painted more close ups and the people in the street are larger.  In many other paintings the people are smaller and a minor feature of the painting.

G D Paulraj - Doing the Dhobi

This is a painting by G D Paulraj showing a lot of man and women cleaning clothes in the river with large mountains in the background.  I posted a similar one back in 2012 but this one I prefer.

G D Paulraj - Two cows at the market

Another great painting by Paul Raj, one of his many market scenes with lots of activity.  The colours still look fresh as well.
I wish I owned this one, it reminds me of my visit to India last November, hope you enjoy this one.

G D Paulraj - Village Tap

This painting recently sold on Ebay for £183.00 it started at £125.00 so it was a good price for a very nice painting.  I remember it changing hands about 18 months ago and I think I added to my blog at that time, but this is a better photo.
The colours look nice and fresh, I think the painting was unframed, shame I could not bid on it, retirement has curbed my spending.
