Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

G D Paulraj - Mist over the Lake

Today I am adding a painting that is currently for sale of Ebay in the UK in case anyone is interested in it. It is listed under item number 1605 4384 5594 asking £495 or 'Make an offer'.  It is slightly different to most other paintings I have seen in that it is purely a landscape with no people visible.  The colours look a bit faded which is a shame.
Latest news the view has been identified as being Kodaikanal which is where the Raj family lived in southern India. Mark has added a photo which I think he took on a visit to Kodaikanal of the same lake from the same vantage point.  I do not think he will mind me adding it next to the painting for comparison.
You can clearly see the similarities with some artistic licence.

  2. I agree...this is different from his usual subjects. Nevertheless, a beautiful work!

  3. I think it is an early work as it is of the area around the family home in Kodaikanal before Paul Raj moved to Madras. A photo of the area today as been added by Mark to the Facebook site.

  4. PaulRaj painted this many many times through his life - partly because it is where they all grew up and partly because it is a strikingly beautiful place. I expect we might see a few more of these... let's hope so.
