Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

Houseboat - The Cutty Sark - Kashmir

I was looking through a box of old photographs that my sister gave me the other day and I have found several that are worth scanning and adding to the blog.  The first is of a Houseboat I stayed in around 1972 while the family did a four week tour of India.  It was called the Cutty Sark and was on the the main lake in Kashmir.
It was a really pleasant stay and to get to the houseboat you had to be transported on a small boat called a Shakari, not sure if that is the correct spelling.  I am told it is a Shikari.

  1. This houseboat still exists and belongs to our family. it is Shikara the small boat that transports you from Land to the Houseboat and VV. It is nice to know that you had a stay at our family boats in 1972 long before i was born!!

  2. Kashmir houseboats are associated closely with the valley's culture and traditions. A brilliant idea that started from constructing small boats was later revolutionized with transforming these boats into spacious modern styled floating hotels. houseboats are all made of the finest cedar wood that follows with intricate walnut wood carvings, paneled walls and tiled baths. Our boats are categorized in the super deluxe category and each boat has an assorted number of three to four bedrooms with a private bath and wash room.
