I purchased this painting a few years ago from a person in Queensland, Australia I feel it really captures the mood of a busy street in what was known as Madras maybe?
I think Paul is really able to capture the shape and form of the cows sat at the side of the road. It is really amazing to think how his paintings have travelled around the world, if only they could tell the story of who bought them and what they were doing in India?
Thanks a lot for sharing such a treasure !
ReplyDeleteThis is so much every costal village of India. Loved this..
ReplyDeleteIt is one of my favourites as well.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct Gold Finch. Leuba (Paulraj daughter and my wife) tells me some fascinating stories of those times. I am continually pressing her for anecdotes relating to life as it was then. Unfortunately the four living children seem little interested in maintaining the stories of their father and uncles. The scene above is very close to where Paulraj and Pankajam first lived in Chennai after moving down from the hills at Kodaikanal. It is amazing to see how different the area is today.
ReplyDeleteHello Watermark. Are you from Chennai yourself or some other area? Do you any Leuba own any paintings by her father? Do you know when he died as I do not have the date? Hope you can help and glad you like the paintings. Best wishes for the new year. I have sent an email a few days ago and would be happy to exchange some information.
ReplyDeleteI have several painting by both GD Paul Raj and G D Arul Raj that were bought in the 1950ies by my parents while living in India.

I have one of the paintings by ThyagaRaj (Gathering Water). I would be willing to sell it. I am asking $100 plus shipping. If you are interested, post a comment to Old Lady.
