Admirer of Paul Raj Paintings

My photo
Paul was born in Kodaikanal on 22 September 1914 and died on 2 October 1979. G D Arulraj was born in 1925 and died in June 1972 while visiting India. Arul worked at Laguna Beach in the 60's and 1970's. G D Thyagaraj might have been born in 1922 and I am told that he probably died sometime before 1981. He moved to northern India as a young man. I lived in India as a child and spent a lot of time in Calcutta. My mother purchased several paintings directly from Paul Raj while living in Madras and this got me interested in his works. I then discovered he had two brothers Arul Raj and Thyaga Raj who were both fantastic artists. I could not find much information on the internet so decided to set up my own blog. Subsequently a Facebook tribute site has also been created to the memory of the three brothers. Contact me at: rajbrothers@hotmail.co.uk

Two G D Paul Raj Paintings from Denmark - Oxen Ploughing and Hay Carts

While searching Google the other day I came across two paintings by G D Paul Raj that were sold by the auction house Bruun Rasmussen in Denmark if you follow the link you will find details of the auction selling price and enlargements of the paintings.
Both paintings seem different from other by Paul Raj and I was wondering if they might be earlier works before he had developed his skills to their full potential also they seem very washed out.
I suppose they could have faded over the years or may be he had not settled on his final palette?

  1. The colors may look a bit faded, but the mood especially in the second one is great.

  2. Hello Prabal
I suspect these two paintings are from a different period in the artist's life. I have many more to add to my blog yet.

  3. Hi
Quite interesting you picked up my purchase on your webside.
The first depict fog and the second rain that's why they are more high key,
but they guess you are right that they might be early work.
The second one seems contemporary with the 100$ rainy day pic.
I had to get rid of the frames and backpaper since they were smelly.
I might send you a couple of pic's of them when the sun returns to denmark.
And don't know the title or year, only they had some red stamps on the backfrom a studio.
